ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Each Spring the Tompkins Cortland Builders & Remodelers Association (TCBRA) in Partnership  with the New York State Builders Association (NYSBA) awards scholarships to area high school students, college students or others who are accepted into a 1, 2 or 4 year program of study related to the residential building industry.

In  2003 the NYSBA Research and Education Foundation renamed it's scholarship program the William Moorehouse Scholarship in recognition of his generous support to NYSBA.  The NYSBA William Moorehouse Scholarship is a $500.00 cash award which requires a matching amount from the local association.

In 2003 the TCBRA Board named it's matching scholarship the Alex Cima Scholarship in honor and memory of Alex and his contribution to both our local association and building in our community.  The TCBRA Alex Cima Scholarship is a $500.00 cash award.

Alex Cima Jr. was born in Ithaca, New York on March 28, 1930.  He attended Ithaca High School graduating in 1949. Following graduation Alex joined the Naval Reserves and worked for NYSEG as a certified welder and 1st class repairman from 1953 to 1965.  Alex left NYSEG to create Cima Builders and Developers in the town of Lansing in 1965.  He first developed SkyAcres in Lansing where he personally built over 60 homes.  In 1985 he and his wife Candace developed The Horizons the first Planned Development Area in the Town of Lansing.  It combined custom homes, rental units and the Horizons Pool and Tennis Club. Building homes and creating neighborhoods was Alex's greatest love.

Beyond his career Alex was involved in many community activities. Alex was a Cub Scout Leader, and a coach in the Ithaca Youth Hockey Association.  He served on the original comittee that organized the Tompkins Cortland Builders and Remodelers Association.  Alex was a charter member of the association and became the first member to receive an honorary lifetime membership in 1993.  He loved to fly his airplane and served on the board of directors of the East Hill Flying Club.  He was a past member of the Lansing Zoning Board of Appeals and the Lansing Planning Board.  As a member of the Lansing Housing Authority Alex sat on the construction committee that oversaw construction of Woodsedge Senior Living Facility.
